Africa’s team has explored a unique method of finding their next big cycling hero
In the X-Men comics, Professor Charles Xavier uses a hi tech programme called Cerebro to find his X-Men. Team Dimension Data have taken similar steps, using online training platform Zwift to find their next cycling superstar.
The team partnered with Zwift to initiate a 6-week training programme called the Team Dimension Data Zwift Academy. Entrants could join the academy and follow a training programme to improve their fitness.
The initiative was run in conjunction with Qhubeka, the non-profit that donates bikes in South Africa, with the incentive that the more riders who graduated from the academy, the more Qhubeka bikes would be donated. There was also a grand prize: the best Under 23 performer would earn a pro contract with the Dimension Data Pro Continental squad.
Over 10 000 riders entered from around the world, and the top three male performers were brought to Cape Town to compete in a final challenge. This would determine who earns the right to race for Dimension Data in 2018. Check out the video to find out who won, and what they had to go through to get it.no responses.
